Therapy for Men

Therapy for Men in West Los Angeles

Therapy for men in West Los Angeles, for the things that are hard to say out loud: the short fuse at home, the worry that will not switch off, the marriage that has gone quiet, the job that takes everything and gives back less each year.

At Life Threads Therapy® you talk to a licensed therapist, in person at our West LA office or by secure video anywhere in California. No script, no couch, and the first conversation is free.

Why Men Come Here

Most men do not book therapy because they feel sad. They book because something practical has stopped working. Sleep. Patience. The ability to sit through a hard conversation with a partner without shutting down or blowing up. Drinking that crept from a couple of beers to a habit. A promotion that brought more dread than pride. Or nothing they can name at all, only a flatness that has been there long enough to feel normal.

Anger is often the first thing anyone else notices, and it is rarely the whole story. Underneath it there is usually anxiety, exhaustion, or something older that never got dealt with. That is what we work on: not managing the surface, but finding out what is driving it and changing that.

What a Session Is Actually Like

The first session is a conversation, not an assessment. You say what is going on in whatever order it comes out. Your therapist asks questions, tells you what they are noticing, and by the end you have a plain-language sense of what is happening and what the work would look like. If you want direct feedback rather than nodding, say so; you will get it.

From there, sessions are usually weekly and built around what you came in for. We use evidence-based approaches and pick the one that fits the problem, not the one that fits a brochure. Sessions are in person at our office on Barrington Avenue in West Los Angeles, or by secure video from anywhere in California, including the middle of a work day.

Anxiety, Anger, Relationships and Work

Anxiety in men often does not look like worry. It looks like irritability, control, overworking, or a body that is always braced for the next thing. Our anxiety therapy starts with what the anxiety is doing for you, then builds a different way to get there, with skills that travel with you between sessions.

Relationships: the same argument on a different day, the distance that crept in, the sense of being managed rather than met. This can be individual work on your side of the pattern, or couples therapy with your partner in the room.

Work: perfectionism, burnout, the career that has become the whole identity, or the one that has stalled. We work with adults on burnout, perfectionism and life adjustments as a matter of course; the men's version usually involves untangling what you are worth from what you produce.

The Tools: EMDR and IFS

Two approaches come up most in this work. EMDR therapy is for the moments your body still reacts to, whether that is a single event or years of the same thing; it reprocesses the memory so it stops running the present. Both of our therapists are EMDR trained, and nobody is asked to revisit anything before they have the tools to come back from it.

IFS therapy, or Internal Family Systems, is for the parts of you that pull in different directions: the critic that never lets up, the part that shuts down in an argument, the part that reaches for a drink. Instead of fighting them, you get curious about what each one is protecting, and the old pattern loosens. Where skills for the heat of the moment are the missing piece, we bring in CBT or DBT skills alongside.

Bree Anthony, MA, LMFT

Bree Anthony, MA, LMFT is our clinic director. She is EMDR trained and IFS-informed, and works with adults on anxiety, trauma and PTSD, panic, OCD, perfectionism and life adjustments.

When couples therapy is the right call, your partner can be in the room.

Lyndsay Mclaren, LPCC

Lyndsay Mclaren, LPCC brings over eleven years across outpatient, residential and inpatient settings. She is EMDR trained and DBT-trained, and works with trauma, substance use, identity, and the stalled start that some men know as failure to launch.

When the problem is the heat of the moment rather than its history, her DBT skills work gives you tools for that first, with the deeper work following once you have them.

Getting Started

Sessions are a flat $200. We are out of network with most insurance and handle the reimbursement paperwork for you; most PPO plans return a share once the deductible is met, and the reimbursement estimator shows what a session is likely to cost you.

Every new client starts with a free 20-minute consultation with no obligation. Say what is going on, ask whatever you want to ask, and decide afterward. Evening appointments are available on weekdays, and you can book online without talking to anyone first, or send a question through the contact page if that feels easier.

Questions Men Ask First

The questions that usually come before the first booking.

Only if it is relevant, and you decide when. Plenty of the work is about what is happening this week. When a pattern clearly has a history behind it, we will say so and let you choose whether to go there. EMDR and IFS do reach back, but on your terms and only once you have ways to steady yourself.
Yes. Secure video sessions are available anywhere in California; you need a private space and a decent connection, nothing else. In-person sessions are at 2001 S Barrington Ave, Suite 215, in West Los Angeles.
We are an out-of-network practice, so you pay the flat $200 session fee and most PPO plans reimburse a share once your out-of-network deductible is met. We check your benefits, file the claims for you, and the reimbursement comes back to you. The reimbursement estimator gives you a number before you book.
That is what the free consultation is for. Twenty minutes, no commitment, and if it is not the right fit we will say so and point you toward something that is. Nobody is signed up for anything by having a conversation.
Absolutely! Couples therapy is available, and you’re welcome to bring this up during your consultation. Your therapist can learn more about what you’re looking for and help you decide whether individual or couples therapy would be the best fit for your needs.
