IFS for Anxiety
IFS Therapy for Anxiety in Los Angeles
IFS therapy for anxiety in Los Angeles starts from an unusual premise: the worry, the overthinking, and the relentless inner critic are not malfunctions. They are parts of you doing protective jobs, and they have usually been doing them for a very long time.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz. At Life Threads Therapy® we use it with clients whose anxiety has not fully responded to logic, reassurance, or willpower.

Most anxious minds contain a familiar cast: the planner who runs every scenario before it happens, the perfectionist who reviews every conversation afterward, the people-pleaser who scans the room before you speak. IFS calls these parts managers, and their job is to keep more vulnerable feelings from ever being touched.
Fighting these parts tends to make them work harder, which is why trying to argue yourself out of anxiety so rarely works. IFS takes the opposite approach: get curious about what each part is protecting, help it trust that you can handle what is underneath, and let it finally relax its grip. IFS calls that unburdening, and it is structural change, not symptom management.
What IFS Anxiety Sessions Look Like
IFS is experiential, not just conversational. With your therapist's support you turn attention inward, notice which parts are active, and engage them directly rather than being run by them. The pace follows your internal readiness; nothing requires you to go somewhere before you are ready.
- Notice what is present: the critic, the anxious planner, the tight chest before a deadline
- Get curious instead of combative: what is this part afraid would happen if it stopped?
- Build trust between your parts and the calm, steady core IFS calls the Self
- Unburden: when a part feels safe enough, it releases what it has been carrying
IFS Alongside CBT, ACT, and EMDR
Anxiety work at Life Threads is never one-size-fits-all. IFS pairs naturally with the other evidence-based approaches our therapists are trained in: CBT for restructuring the thought patterns that fuel anxiety, ACT for values-based action while anxiety is still present, and EMDR when the anxiety is rooted in experiences your nervous system never fully processed.
In practice this means your therapist can shift emphasis as the work unfolds, rather than forcing your anxiety to fit one model. If you want the broader picture, our anxiety therapy page covers the full toolkit.
IFS for Anxiety at Life Threads Therapy
Lyndsay Mclaren, LPCC works with IFS as part of her practice with teens, adults, and families, and our team draws on IFS-informed principles across our anxiety and trauma work. Sessions run in person at our West Los Angeles office, at 2001 S Barrington Ave between Santa Monica and Culver City, and virtually throughout California.
If your anxiety feels less like parts at war and more like constant generalized worry, that is worth a conversation too; the consultation is where we figure out the right approach together. You can also reach us any time through the contact page.
