Trauma Therapy

Trauma Therapist in West Los Angeles

A trauma therapist in West Los Angeles should offer you more than another retelling of what happened. Understanding your story matters; processing it, so it stops running your nervous system, is the actual work.

Life Threads Therapy® treats trauma and PTSD with EMDR, psychodynamic, and IFS-informed approaches, in person in West LA and virtually throughout California.

Trauma Does Not Always Look Like Trauma

Some trauma announces itself: an accident, an assault, a loss. Much of what we treat is quieter, complex trauma from childhood experiences, relational wounds, medical events, or years spent in survival mode. It tends to show up sideways:

  • Anxiety that logic cannot touch, or panic that arrives without warning
  • A nervous system that never fully stands down: hypervigilance, poor sleep, exhaustion
  • Core beliefs like "I am not safe" or "I am not enough" that argue back against every reassurance
  • Relationship patterns where old pain keeps choosing your reactions for you
  • Feeling fine on paper and disconnected from your own life

How We Treat It

EMDR is the backbone of our trauma work: an evidence-based therapy recognized by the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, with its deepest research base in trauma and PTSD. It helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they stop carrying the same charge, without requiring you to narrate every detail.

Around it, our therapists draw on psychodynamic therapy for relational and complex trauma, IFS-informed parts work for the protectors that formed around old wounds, and somatic approaches for what the body is still holding.

Hands held in support, trauma therapy at Life Threads Therapy in West Los Angeles

Safety First, Always

Trauma work has a non-negotiable order of operations. Before any reprocessing begins, you and your therapist build stabilization skills and enough trust to support what comes next; in EMDR terms, the preparation phase is never skipped. Sessions end with closure, so you leave grounded regardless of where the processing is.

And if what you need first is steadiness rather than trauma processing, we will say that plainly. Readiness is part of the treatment, not a delay of it.

Trauma Therapy Questions

Honest answers for a hard first step.

No. EMDR in particular does not require extensive verbal recounting; you hold the memory in mind while your therapist guides the processing. Many clients find it less activating than retelling their story in traditional talk therapy.
You do not need a formal label to deserve help. If an experience still causes real distress, shapes how you see yourself, or keeps your nervous system on alert, it is worth addressing, whatever you call it.
It varies with the complexity of what you are carrying. Work focused on a specific experience often shifts in a relatively small number of sessions; complex trauma histories work over a longer arc. Your therapist will set honest expectations at your consultation.
Yes. Telehealth EMDR has been shown to be effective, and we see trauma clients virtually throughout California, with in-person sessions available at our West LA office.
